Why Mati?
Why Mati?
Mati was born out of a love for travel, connection, and tradition.
During our journeys we discovered that yerba mate is more than
just a drink: it’s a ritual.
A moment of pause, connection, and natural energy. In the Netherlands, we miss that feeling. Something to enjoy on a terrace that isn’t coffee or alcohol. Not a sugar bomb, but still something
that gives you energy. Something pure, with a story.
That’s how Mati came to life. A modern tribute to
an ancient tradition to honor its origins with respect.

what is mati?
Mati is a refreshing drink brewed from freshly roasted yerba mate leaves.
a tree native to Paraguay, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina.
In the wild it grows up to 20 meters,
but on plantations it’s kept lower for easier harvesting.
The leaves are harvested in their natural form, dried and roasted.
The result: a slightly bitter, ice-cold drink with a subtle smoky aroma
and a smooth kick.
It gives you a long-lasting, clean boost without the caffeine crash.
perfect on a terrace, during your workday, before a workout or simply
as a natural alternative to coffee or soft drinks.

Origine: a tribute to
the GuaraNI culture
the Guaraní people first discovered the energizing and healing powers of yerba mate. For them it symbolized hospitality, health, and connection to nature.
From the Guaraní ritual of sharing, mate spread
through Jesuits, pathfinders and adventurers,
becoming a tradition that reached far beyond South America.
At Mati, we honor these roots by working with local family farmers
and telling the story with respect for where it truly comes from.

Ritual and Tradition
Yerba mate has always been a communal drink, meant to be shared.
Traditionally, it’s prepared in a hollow gourd (Cuia) and drunk through
a metal straw (bombilla). The cebador makes the first sip to check the taste,
then passes the gourd around the circle. Everyone drinks from the same gourd,
as a sign of trust, equality, and friendship.
Clear rules apply: once you accept the mate, you finish it before handing it back.
Customs vary across South America. from offering mate to nature or ancestors,
to carrying a gourd and thermos everywhere. But everywhere, mate symbolizes hospitality, connection, and community.

Sustainability and nature
The yerba mate tree is a long life tree. it keeps growing and producing harvests for decades. Often cultivated under the shade of Araucaria trees, it develops a milder taste while supporting biodiversity.
Thousands of small-scale farmers care for these trees and deliver their harvest to facilities which this is done under EU-organic standards.
At Mati, we are committed to organic and Rainforest Alliance certification. ensuring not only sustainable farming and respect for nature, but also the
well-being and future of the farmers who make this tradition possible.
